What Does 7 Gauge or 12 Gauge Mean in Knitwear?
Gauge describes the density of a knitted construction. In general, a lower gauge number creates a heavier and more textured garment, while a higher gauge number creates a finer and lighter knit. The final result also depends on yarn size, stitch structure and finishing.
Lower-gauge knitwear
Lower gauges are often considered for chunky sweaters, winter cardigans and textured stitches. They can create a stronger visual statement and a warmer hand feel, but they may require careful attention to weight, fit and packing.
Higher-gauge knitwear
Higher gauges can suit lightweight layering pieces, fine-gauge tops and transitional-season collections. They may offer a cleaner drape, but the yarn and finishing must be matched carefully to avoid distortion.
Choose gauge with the full design
Gauge should not be selected in isolation. Consider the yarn composition, stitch type, target fit, season, size range and intended retail position. The best practice is to test the chosen gauge in a sample before bulk approval.
